On the Island of Long

We arrived on Long Island at about 11:30 p.m. last night after starting our journey in Rochester at 4:00 p.m. Considering that we got stuck in some construction-related delays in Syracuse and again just past the G.W. Bridge, I think we made pretty good time. Thank heavens for Red Bull!

Final Day at Unity

Today is my final day as an employee of Unity Health System of Rochester, NY. In honor of this occasion I have decided to break my own personal rule and post this entry from my desk at work using the corporate network. What are they going to do? Fire me?

A Busy Week Ahead

To celebrate my departure from Unity I will have the privilege of driving from Rochester to New York (actually to Long Island) immediately after I leave today. The trip should take about 7 1/2 hours. I hope to be able to get on the road by 14:30 - 15:00 and be on the island by 22:00 - 23:00. Of course, most of this will depend on GW bridge traffic...oh how I loathe that bridge!

I will be on Long Island with Nicole until Sunday, and then we will be driving back to Rochester. Then it's off to Los Angeles for a week while I train with my new employer: Transplant Connect. I have a feeling that I won't be getting much rest during the immediate future.

Park Ave Fest

I'll be returning from Los Angeles on Saturday, August 6, just in time for Rochester's annual Park Avenue fest. What about your much-needed rest and relaxation after such a busy week of travel, you may ask? Nah! I'll be celebrating my return by hanging out at my friend Matt's party on Sunday.

You can rest when you're dead.

But I don't mind. Despite my rambling on and on about it, I'm not really complaining. I'm looking forward to the new and exciting things ahead and to the little vacation (even though it will be mostly work).

Terrorists Winning the War on Freedom

With another terror attack on the London subway striking fear into the hearts and minds of westerners, the United States Congress yesterday voted to extend the provisions of the Patriot Act indefinitely (with two exceptions: the searching of medical records and the use of roving wiretap provisions were extended for ten years).

In spite of our successes on military battlefronts throughout the world, the terroists have been successful in attaining their ultimate goal: to diminish our freedoms and reshape our way of life. It is a fallacey to believe that the goal of these terrorists is to see the complete destruction and fall of the United States or other western democratic civilizations. This is an unrealistic understanding. In reality, the goal of terrorism is much simpler...and is being attained.

This morning in New York City, NYPD officers began the first random searches of passengers entering their subway system. According to the NYC police commissioner, passengers will be searched on a strictly numerical basis (i.e. 1 in 5, 1 in 10, etc.) unless "specific information" is available regarding a "specific incident," in which case some form of profiling will be utilized. Mayor Michael Bloomberg acknowledges that the searches will seem intrusive, but that they are necessary given the dangers of our changing world.

The dangers of our changing world.

The world has changed.

Terrorists have changed it.

The public is fearful.

The goal of terrorism is fear and control.

As the rate of suicide bombings grow in western countries, we will witness increases in government responsibility, government authority, government regulation, and government control in the most trivial events of our daily lives...all in the name of freedom. At what point will live in the police states that terrorist governments have imposed on their people for many years?

Yes, it is true that we will not (hopefully) ever see a government identical to that of the Taliban or Saddam Hussein's, but at what point do we acknowledge that our way of life has changed so dramatically that terrorism has succeeded in its basalar goal?

Which freedom will be the breaking point? Where do we draw the line? How many basic rights will we be willing to give up before we take a step back and realize what has happened to our world?

Just as the Patriot Act renewal shows....none of this is temporary. So long as we acknoweldge it...and are fearful of it...it will never end. It cannot end.

Starting Anew

I finally did it; I tendered my resignation at Unity Health and will be starting a new job August 1. My last day working at the old St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester will be Thursday, July 28, 2005. It has been an interesting experience working for Unity, but to be frankly honest I am glad to leave.

Of course, I still continue to work part-time for Rural/Metro Rochester and Spencerport Ambulance (while also volunteering for Chili FD).

Coming to Los Angeles in August

As part of the new job that I have accepted, I will be in Los Angeles August 1 - 6 for training/orientation. Hopefully I'll have some free time in the evenings to meet up with those of you whom I haven't seen in quite some time. Of cousre, Nicole and I will be back in Los Angeles in October anyway (more details to follow at a later point in time).

It's happening!
My site is finally undergoing a massive reconstruction.

Right now only this home page is functional, but within the next week the rest of the site links will work again. In addition to the obvious (and rather dramatic) change in site layout and navigation, a new-and-improved photo gallery is planned. I have also enabled user-comments on the blog, so feel free to post your (tasteful) commentaries.

Please keep in mind that this site is in the early stages of its redesign so most links will lead to errors. There is no need to let me know if links don't work until I post a message stating that I have completed my updates. In the meantime, however, please provide me with any feedback on the general layout, color scheme, etc. of the site by commenting to this post.

Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you again!
